Miguel Ramos
Born and based on the island of Madeira, Miguel Ramos is one of the most dynamic and recognized ceramic artists in the region. He is the founder and creative force behind the ceramic studio Barro Cru, where he creates, experiments, and teaches creative ceramics to new generations.
From an early age, Miguel was fascinated by the act of creating — building his own toys as a child, drawing in school, and learning to love tools from his grandfather. His artistic journey formally began in 2003, with a course in painting and ceramics in Reguengos de Monsaraz (Alentejo), where his passion for clay took root.
He went on to study Creative Ceramics at CENCAL in Caldas da Rainha — an experience that proved to be a turning point in his career. During his professional internship in a traditional pottery studio, he worked closely with master artisans and absorbed a wide range of ceramic practices and techniques. Over the years, he has continued to train through workshops and personal exploration.
“My work is creative and constantly evolving. I’m inspired by everything — from the sea to the mountains, and by the deep cultural identity of Madeira.”
Miguel's ceramics reflect a strong connection to nature, tradition, and craft. He often combines clay with local materials such as wicker, creating singular pieces that honor both form and function. Despite the geographic limitations of island life — including the difficulty of sourcing materials or accessing master ceramists — he continues to develop new themes inspired by Madeira's landscapes and cultural richness.
“More and more people value what is handmade. That gives me hope. With dedication and authenticity, I believe it is truly possible to live fully from what you love.”
