Every year, our Art Center Caravel invite artists connected to Madeira Island to take part in a collective exhibition built around a single, resonant theme.
This year’s word is Memory — a call to reflect, remember, and reimagine in a world of constant change.
The open call for Islands 2025: MEMORY is now officially open.

Artists of all styles, disciplines, and nationalities are welcome to apply — as long as they are currently living on Madeira Island or have a direct connection to it.
Application Requirements:
Each artist must submit a minimum of 5 artworks.
Selected participants will collaborate closely with the organizing team. This includes providing:
high-quality images of the artworks,
an artist biography,
an artist statement (linked to the theme),
and agreeing to participate in interviews and the exhibition’s promotional campaign.
Once selected, artists cannot retrieve their works during the exhibition period. All exhibited works will remain at Caravel Art Center for the full two-month duration.
In the case of a sale, the gallery will retain a commission fee, and the artist is required to issue a fatura verde (or an equivalent form of financial documentation).
The deadline for submissions is July 1st, 2025.All works will be reviewed by our curatorial team, who reserve the right to make the final selection based on artistic merit and relevance to the theme.
We look forward to seeing how memory takes shape through your work — and to celebrating it here, on the island.
Beyond the Exhibition: Opportunities for Participating Artists
At Caravel Art Center, we believe an exhibition is not only about showing art — it’s also about connecting with people and creating shared experiences.
That’s why all selected artists will be offered the opportunity to lead a workshop or artist talk as part of the public program. These sessions can range from creative workshops to open discussions or live demonstrations.
No fee will be charged to artists for organizing these sessions.
For free and public workshops, Caravel can cover up to €100 in materials costs.
Artists may also request access to an open studio space during the exhibition, allowing them to create on-site and engage with the audience. (Schedule and details to be agreed upon.)
What is it ARThubMADEIRA ?
Launched in 2023, ARTHubMADEIRA is a physical creative space developed by Art Center Caravelin collaboration with ARTEM – Artistic and Cultural Association.
Located in the heart of Funchal, it serves as a co-working and co-creation hub for artists. More than just a program, Art Hub Madeira offers a space where artistic practices can be shared, ideas exchanged, and collaborative projects brought to life.
Whether born on the island or simply inspired by its atmosphere, artists come together here to experiment, reflect, and grow as part of an active community.
This year’s annual exhibition takes place within this vibrant context — and turns its focus to a powerful and timely theme: Memory.
