We talked with artist Vadym Dubrov about his understanding of solidarity and the influence of art

“You cannot turn away from other people's problems, hoping that these problems will not affect you.”

We talked with artist Vadym Dubrov about his understanding of solidarity and the influence of war on art. His artworks will be exhibited at the “Islands Show” in February. Read about how he’s dealing with today’s world situation:

What does SOLIDARITY mean to you regarding today’s world situation?

Solidarity means to be together in order to endure, to resist war with the help of art and to fight for the restoration of peace. Only together we can change things, alone it is very difficult. You cannot turn away from other people's problems, hoping that these problems will not affect you. If you do nothing, tomorrow these problems will come to you. Don’t keep silent, don’t turn a blind eye to injustice - you have to act, you have to unite and act.

How does war effect you and does it effect your art?

On February 24th, my world was destroyed. On this day, the peace and prosperity of my Ukraine and all of Europe was shattered. For six months I could not paint, it was very painful for me. But I know that art can reach the heart. And I decided to write what I feel. Now, perhaps my art saves me from pain. And I know that I can say with my art what is stronger than words.

Do you think art is an influential way to let your opinions known on a certain topic and an effective way of expression?

Yes, I do. Art communicates from heart to heart directly, so it is more powerful than words.

What is your motivation to keep creating and avoid burnout?

Right now, the motivation to create is to reach out to many people, to be heard, to hasten the end of war and the restoration of a just peace.

Thank you Vadym for this wonderful visit to our gallery
